‘I’m Still Here’ Star Maeve Jinkings Set for Women’s Convent-Prison Daring Escape Drama ‘Cabildo 71’ (EXCLUSIVE)

Variety ·

Maeve Jinkings will star in *Cabildo 71*, a drama about women political prisoners who escaped from a convent-run prison in Uruguay. The film is based on real events and centres on a choir the prisoners used as cover, bringing a lesser-known episode of the country’s political history to the screen.

Victoria “Pitoka” Pena’s story follows La Parda and 12 fellow prisoners as they escape during Mass on 8 March 1970; a year later, La Parda is captured again as a larger escape plan takes shape. Jinkings plays a nun, while eight Uruguayan actresses are confirmed to portray the Tupamaras, including Graciela Ingold and Carolina Genoni as the Topolansky sisters. Filming is planned for September to November next year, and production has backing from Argentine and bilateral film funds.

Uruguay was under civilian rule in 1970, but political conflict was growing between the government and armed groups. One of them, the Tupamaros, was a left-wing movement whose members included women who were imprisoned for their activities.

The story draws on an escape by 13 women from a prison run by nuns, where a choir gave the prisoners a way to conceal their plans. It follows La Parda and the other prisoners, placing the escape within a period of political unrest that shaped Uruguay’s recent history.
