Imax Quarterly Revenues, Profit Rises on Premium Screen Gold Rush

The Hollywood Reporter · 3 hours ago

Imax reported higher second-quarter revenue and profit, driven by a surge in demand for premium large-format screens and films shot with its proprietary cameras, including Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey. The results underline how Imax has become central to a broader "premium screen gold rush" among major cinema chains, benefiting from a post-pandemic rebound in Hollywood box office and studios' growing willingness to shoot and release films specifically for its giant-screen format.

Imax posted quarterly revenue of $102.8 million, up 12 percent from $91.7 million a year earlier, while net income climbed 30 percent to $15.9 million from $12 million. Adjusted earnings per share rose 65 percent to 43 cents. Content solutions revenue, from studio and filmmaker agreements, edged up 2 percent to $35 million, while technology products and services revenue, covering theatre system sales, leases and maintenance, grew 16 percent to $65 million; the company also cited a record $52 million global opening weekend for The Odyssey on Imax screens as a strong sign for the current quarter.
