Imax reported stronger second-quarter earnings, with the company's chief executive describing the box-office frenzy around Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey" as a "transformational event" set to boost results further in the current quarter. Revenue and profit both grew, driven partly by strong performances from other releases, while the company also flagged record-breaking demand for Nolan's latest film, which has driven sell-out screenings on Imax's large-format screens.
For the quarter ending in June, Imax revenues rose 12% to $102.8 million and net income climbed 30% to $15.9 million, with adjusted earnings per share up 65% to 43 cents. Global box office reached $285 million, its best second-quarter figure since 2019, aided by "Michael", "The Mandalorian & Grogu" and "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie". Looking ahead, "The Odyssey" — the first film shot entirely on Imax cameras — took a record 20% share of its opening weekend global box office ($52 million) on Imax screens, with a further $60 million already in pre-sales for future showings; CEO Rich Gelfond said the film's momentum would carry into the second half of the year, alongside the similarly Imax-shot "Dune: Part Three".
