In 1960, Elvis Presley set foot on British soil. That would be the first and last time

Far Out ·

Elvis Presley’s only visit to British soil came in March 1960, when his plane stopped at Prestwick, Scotland, on the way back from his US Army service in West Germany. The 90-minute refuelling stop was not a concert or a planned tour, but it remains the sole occasion he visited the UK.

His manager, Colonel Tom Parker, reportedly feared that travelling abroad could prevent his return to the United States because Parker had entered the country illegally. While other American musicians toured Britain in the late 1950s, Presley stayed in the US apart from his military service overseas. Fans gathered at Prestwick to see him, but he had no time to perform and never returned to Britain.
