In 1974, Genesis released their most ambitious album. Ask Peter Gabriel what it means: “Who the fuck knows?”
Genesis’s *The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway*, released in 1974, turned the band’s progressive rock ambition into a sprawling concept album. Peter Gabriel later said the group had overcomplicated its story, but the record’s songs still connect through vivid musical moods, even when the larger allegory is hard to follow.
At a 2025 event marking the album’s 50th anniversary, Gabriel described its concept as a journey into the soul, in which difficult experiences help a character understand himself. He recalled disagreements over the story and lyrics and said making the album was difficult for the band. Songs such as “In the Cage” and “The Carpet Crawlers” offer more immediate emotional appeal within the complex narrative.
In short
- Gabriel said Genesis overcooked the album’s concept.
- He framed Rael’s story as a journey into the soul.
- Disagreements made the ambitious 1974 record difficult to create.
