In 1975, George Harrison met his new best friends. Four years later, he still put The Beatles first
George Harrison found a close creative bond with Monty Python after meeting the comedy group in 1975, seeing their irreverent humour as a welcome new kind of companionship after The Beatles. Their friendship mattered to him because it echoed the camaraderie of his former band and helped fill a period when he felt little was happening.
Harrison said it took only ten minutes to feel they were old friends, and called Monty Python his favourite thing after The Beatles. He appeared with the troupe as Pirate Bob and in performances of “The Lumberjack Song”; John Lennon also admired their humour. In 1979, Harrison still placed The Beatles first, describing Python as a bridge across the years when “there was nothing really doing”.
In short
- Harrison quickly bonded with Monty Python after meeting them in 1975.
- He saw their humour as a link to The Beatles’ old camaraderie.
- By 1979, he still ranked The Beatles above the comedy troupe.
