In 1989, Eddie Murphy directed his first movie: He hated the experience and never did it again

Far Out ·

Eddie Murphy’s only film as director was *Harlem Nights*, released in 1989, in which he also starred, wrote and executive-produced. He later said he took on those roles because his peers were directing and producing their own films, and that he disliked the experience throughout.

The film, set in 1910s New York and featuring Richard Pryor, Danny Aiello and Redd Foxx, grossed $60.9 million. Murphy received a Golden Raspberry Award for worst screenplay and a nomination for worst director; despite later gaining a cult following, the experience did not lead him to direct another film.
