In 1997, Ewan McGregor founded a production company. Five years later, he “fucked off” and left it to die
Ewan McGregor helped found the production company Natural Nylon in 1997 with actors Jude Law, Jonny Lee Miller, Sadie Frost and Sean Pertwee. The company made several films, but it slowly collapsed after McGregor left in 2002, saying that nobody was being paid; his departure came as his acting career was rapidly expanding.
Natural Nylon was involved in David Cronenberg’s 1999 film eXistenZ and produced Nora, in which McGregor also starred, before releasing the poorly received XX/XY in 2002. McGregor had risen to global recognition as Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars, followed by Moulin Rouge! and Black Hawk Down. Law also left the company the following year, and it then folded.
In short
- McGregor co-founded Natural Nylon with four fellow actors in 1997.
- He left in 2002 as the company struggled to pay people.
- Jude Law departed the following year, and the company folded.
Explained simply
Natural Nylon was a film production company set up in 1997 by actors Ewan McGregor, Jude Law, Jonny Lee Miller, Sadie Frost and Sean Pertwee. It was involved in several films, including David Cronenberg’s science-fiction film eXistenZ and Nora, which starred McGregor.
The company began to struggle as its founders’ acting careers grew. McGregor said he left in 2002 because nobody was being paid; Law left the next year, and Natural Nylon later closed. Its story shows the practical challenges of keeping a small film company going while its founders pursue busy acting careers.
