In 2010, Chris Hemsworth auditioned to play Mad Max. 14 years later, he stole an entire movie from the franchise
Chris Hemsworth wanted to play Mad Max when George Miller began developing *Fury Road* in 2010, but he was too little known to secure an audition or meeting. Tom Hardy took the role, and Hemsworth eventually joined the franchise 14 years later as the villain Dementus in *Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga*.
Hemsworth said he grew up watching Miller’s films and was eager to work with the director after seeing *Fury Road*. At the time of his unsuccessful attempt, his best-known work was on Australian soap opera *Home and Away*; by 2024, he had built a career through the *Thor* and *Avengers* films and other projects. *Furiosa* focuses on a younger version of Charlize Theron’s character, leaving Max out of the central story.
In short
- Hemsworth missed out on playing Max in 2010.
- Tom Hardy took the role in *Fury Road*.
- Hemsworth later played villain Dementus in *Furiosa*.
Explained simply
Mad Max is a post-apocalyptic film series created by Australian director George Miller. Its stories take place in a harsh future where people compete for fuel and other scarce resources; the films are known for high-speed chases and elaborate vehicles.
Tom Hardy played Max in 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is a separate story centred on Furiosa, a character first played by Charlize Theron, and introduces Chris Hemsworth as the warlord Dementus. Hemsworth had become widely known through Marvel’s Thor and Avengers films before joining the series.
