In 2010, Olivia Wilde auditioned for an Oscar-nominated role. It was the “most mortifying” of her life
Olivia Wilde recalled that auditioning for the lead role in *Gravity* was the “most mortifying” experience of her life, because she felt certain she would get the part. The 2013 space drama became a major critical and commercial success, and missing out on it was a significant disappointment for Wilde.
Wilde said she screen-tested in a real spacecraft pod and did extensive anti-gravity work. Several actors were considered for Ryan Stone, including Angelina Jolie, Natalie Portman, Marion Cotillard, Naomi Watts, Blake Lively and Sienna Miller, before Sandra Bullock was cast opposite George Clooney. *Gravity* won seven Oscars from ten nominations; Wilde appeared in *Her* in 2013 and later moved into directing, making her debut with *Booksmart* in 2019.
In short
- Wilde thought she was sure to land the lead in *Gravity*.
- Sandra Bullock won the role after several stars were considered.
- *Gravity* went on to win seven Oscars.
