ESPN has begun a round of layoffs linked to its recently completed deal with the NFL, resulting in the departure of two prominent on-air personalities, lead baseball commentator Karl Ravech and NFL analyst Ryan Clark. Chairman Jimmy Pitaro confirmed the cuts in a staff memo, explaining they follow a review of teams and resources undertaken as ESPN integrates NFL assets, including the NFL Network, acquired earlier this year. The move matters because it signals the practical, human cost of consolidating ESPN's operations with those of the NFL, and comes as the sports broadcaster continues to grapple with rising rights costs and a shrinking pay-TV subscriber base.

Most of the affected roles are behind-the-scenes production staff, though Ravech, at ESPN since 1993, and Clark, who joined in 2015 after a 13-season playing career, are among the more recognisable names leaving. A source told Deadline the cuts are far smaller in scale than ESPN's 2023 layoffs under former Disney chief Bob Iger. The NFL-ESPN transaction closed last February, with the league taking a 10% stake in ESPN, valued at $30 billion, in exchange for ESPN gaining control of media assets including the NFL Network; the layoffs form part of wider Disney-wide job cuts also being announced the same day.
