Juliette Binoche makes her directing debut with In-I in Motion, a documentary revisiting her 2008 dance-theatre collaboration with British choreographer Akram Khan. The film draws on behind-the-scenes footage of their creative process to explore In-I, the love-story piece that premiered in London to mixed reviews, offering an unusually candid look at two celebrated performers working outside their usual disciplines, particularly Binoche, who had no prior professional dance experience.

The documentary is structured in two halves: an intimate, fly-on-the-wall studio segment showing months of rehearsal, including intense sessions with acting coach Susan Batson, followed by a staged performance set against a design by artist Anish Kapoor. It was shot by Binoche's sister, film-maker Marion Stalens, over six months and drawn from 170 hours of footage, though it lacks narration or interviews to explain context such as why Binoche waited 17 years to release it. The film has no voiceover explaining its editing choices, leaving some questions about the pair's process unanswered, but its raw intensity is compelling to watch. In-I in Motion opens at Ciné Lumière, London, on 18 September.
