The inaugural LA Jazz Festival, founded by former Los Angeles City Councilman Martin Ludlow, was cancelled just hours before its scheduled kick-off on 7 August, leaving artists, vendors and ticket-holders in the lurch. The event had been billed as a major addition to the city's cultural calendar, featuring weeks of performances across parks and nightclubs, a Caribbean street carnival in Venice, and a two-day beachside mini-festival with acts including John Legend, Janelle Monáe and Parliament Funkadelic. Its sudden collapse has drawn criticism from the industry for its lateness and lack of professionalism.

Ludlow cited "unanticipated last-minute public safety and municipal costs" tied to permitting for the beach festival as the reason for cancelling, promising ticket refunds within 30 days but making no mention of payments owed to performers, some of whom had already made travel arrangements without signed contracts. Booking agent Maurice Montoya, who represented 15 acts booked for the festival, said such problems are typically evident weeks in advance rather than days. Adding to the confusion, the festival's Instagram page has not addressed the cancellation, while its website now lists new dates of 22–23 August with no further explanation.
