Nor’easter may expose remains of 1884 Nantucket shipwreck
Fragments believed to belong to the 142-year-old schooner Warren Sawyer have washed ashore on Nantucket during a powerful nor’easter. Although the wreckage has not been definitively identified, experts think the storm may have exposed part of the historic shipwreck, highlighting how extreme weather can uncover long-buried maritime history.
The Warren Sawyer sank near Miacomet Beach on 22 December 1884 while travelling from New Orleans to Boston with cotton and scrap iron. Its eight-man crew was rescued by local lifesavers, and pieces of the vessel were also found in 2023 and confirmed as part of the ship; meanwhile, the latest storm has caused flooding, power cuts and deaths across parts of the US East Coast.
