Dawn rainbow frames Glastonbury Tor as Storm Austen approaches

Daily Mail ·

A dawn rainbow over Glastonbury Tor was captured by photographer Michelle Cowbourne after torrential rain, with the church tower set against a vivid red and blue sky. The images show the Somerset landmark from outside and from inside St Michael’s Church, as Storm Austen was forecast to bring strong winds to the region.

Cowbourne said the rainbow appeared for only a few moments as the sun rose and clouds arrived from the west, leaving her drenched while she photographed it. Forecast gusts in Somerset were expected to reach 50 to 60mph, with more than 70mph possible in exposed coastal areas; amber and yellow wind warnings covered parts of south-west England, southern England and south Wales, alongside warnings of travel disruption, damage and power cuts.

In short

  • Storm Austen was forecast to bring strong winds and disruption.

Explained simply

Glastonbury Tor is a hill in Somerset topped by the tower of St Michael’s Church, a well-known local landmark. The tower is all that remains of a medieval church, and the Tor is visible across much of the surrounding countryside.

Storms can bring strong winds and heavy rain to south-west England, affecting travel, buildings and power supplies. Weather warnings indicate the expected level of risk and can cover different areas and time periods; exposed coasts are often more vulnerable to high winds than places inland.
