Sony has acquired global distribution rights for "Ramayana," director Nitesh Tiwari's big-budget Hindu fantasy epic, marking what producer Namit Malhotra calls the first film ever to receive a mainstream worldwide theatrical release through a partnership between a Hollywood studio and an Indian production. The deal, announced at San Diego Comic-Con alongside the debut trailer, is being framed as a historic milestone after more than a century of separate Hollywood and Indian film industries, and positions the project as one of the most ambitious Indian fantasy productions since "Baahubali".

Ranbir Kapoor stars as the prince Rama, who must confront the demon king Ravana (played by Yash), with a supporting cast including Sai Pallavi, Ravi Dubey and Sunny Deol. Speaking to Collider, Tiwari, Kapoor and Malhotra discussed the film's ambitious visual effects, marketing plans and a possible appearance at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival, while confirming that edits for Part 1 are locked and work on the sequel is paused to focus on this release. "Ramayana: Part 1" is set for cinema release on 6 November 2026.
