India’s education minister, Dharmendra Pradhan, resigned after weeks of youth-led protests over alleged examination paper leaks and wider failures in the education system. The resignation is a significant concession by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government and highlights broader young people’s frustration over unemployment, opportunities and public accountability.

The Cockroach Janta Party, a satirical movement inspired by a disputed remark about unemployed young people, organised demonstrations in more than a dozen cities. Protesters demanded exam reforms, action over alleged police violence and compensation for families of students who died by suicide; one leaked medical entrance examination affected about two million candidates, while India has around 367 million people aged 15 to 29.
