India’s ‘cockroach’ protest called off after education minister quits

BBC World · 3 hours ago

India’s Cockroach Janta Party has ended its five-week protest after Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned, with supporters celebrating in Delhi. The online satirical movement, which is not a formal political party, had become a prominent outlet for young people’s anger over education and unemployment, making the resignation a significant public setback for Narendra Modi’s government.

Pradhan said he resigned out of respect for young people’s aspirations and to prevent the unrest being exploited, following a police crackdown on a march to parliament that injured dozens. The CJP, founded by political strategist Abhijeet Dipke, has 26 million Instagram followers and demanded education reforms, action on exam-paper leaks and Pradhan’s resignation; its protests drew wider attention after activist Sonam Wangchuk began a hunger strike on 28 June.
