Indonesia Drafts New Film Law as Jakarta, Home to Four Netflix Productions, Courts International Shoots (EXCLUSIVE)

Variety ·

Indonesia is drafting a revised Film Law that could give the Indonesian Film Agency more authority and dedicated funding, as Jakarta seeks to establish itself as a regional film hub. The changes could address gaps in support for the film industry, while the capital is attracting international productions and building services for filmmakers.

The draft is being prepared with the Ministry of Culture, but its details remain under discussion. Jakarta says Netflix is making four titles there, and has introduced a one-stop filming service, cut some location fees by 50% and offered a 50% cinema tax concession for qualifying Indonesian films. The city aims to develop studios, soundstages and post-production facilities over the next three to five years; discussions at its film summit will also explore how to value film intellectual property for lending.
