Fifa president Gianni Infantino is facing mounting pressure after proposing to sell stakes in the World Cup to private investors. The plan has prompted opposition from football bodies, including a threatened boycott by Uefa members, and has raised doubts over Infantino’s prospects of securing another term as president.

Carlos Cordeiro, a senior adviser since 2021, resigned, describing the proposal as damaging to Fifa, its member associations and football’s future, while questioning its transparency and need given Fifa’s large debt-free reserves. Fifa chief operating officer Kevin Lamour also publicly criticised Infantino, saying the project had been pursued unilaterally and that Fifa staff and stakeholders had been misled; Uefa and other confederations are reportedly considering challengers for next year’s election.
