Perth breeder jailed after 105 dogs suffered neglect in extreme heat

Daily Mail ·

A Perth breeder has been jailed for nine months after 105 dogs were found without adequate food or water in heat exceeding 40C. The case highlights the consequences of prolonged neglect on animals and the difficulty of rehabilitating dogs after severe physical and psychological harm.

RSPCA WA found the dogs at Jia Xu Dong’s Canning Vale property in December 2024, after some escaped while he was away; 22 were later euthanised. He was convicted of 36 animal cruelty offences and fined $5,000 for selling a puppy he had been ordered to surrender. The court heard he may have bred more than 390 puppies over four years, earning up to $1.17 million, and about 80 per cent of the surviving dogs have since been re-homed.

In short

  • Breeder jailed for neglecting 105 dogs in extreme heat.
  • 22 dogs were euthanised after the rescue.
  • About 80 per cent of survivors have been re-homed.

Explained simply

Dog breeding means keeping dogs to produce puppies for sale. Breeders are responsible for providing animals with food, water, shelter and appropriate care, and animal welfare laws can make neglect a criminal offence.

The RSPCA is an animal welfare organisation that investigates reports of cruelty and can take animals into care. Dogs rescued after prolonged neglect may need extensive treatment and rehabilitation, and some may be too unwell to recover; others can be placed in new homes.
