Inside ‘cursed’ sex-filled Dutch movie so explicit it lay on the cutting room floor for decades with star killing himself days after filming ended – as it’s finally released in cinemas
Dutch art-house film *Diary of a Weak Yogi*, made in 1993, has finally reached cinemas after more than three decades. Directed by Pim de la Parra and Ronaldo la Silva, it follows two couples whose relationships deteriorate amid jealousy, sexual frustration and partner-swapping, with explicit BDSM and nudity making it too controversial for an immediate theatrical release.
Production was further complicated by lead actor Kamaran Abdulla’s suicide, aged 34, days after filming ended. The Dutch Film Fund withheld completion money, leaving the film without finishing work such as its soundtrack and credits; although the directors later won court rulings ordering payment, the money was not provided, and the film remained unreleased until director Paul Ruven helped secure its eventual cinema release.
- A controversial Dutch film has reached cinemas 30 years after production.
- Explicit content and funding disputes delayed its release.
