Rather than attending Wednesday's memorial ceremony at Utah Valley University, the site of the shooting, or taking the stage at a GOP midterm convention event in Dallas held in his honour, the 37-year-old is choosing to grieve quietly with their two young children, family and close friends, according to her spokesman.

Her retreat from the spotlight follows a whirlwind year in which she became CEO of Turning Point USA just five days after delivering an emotional public address, and later accepted the Presidential Medal of Freedom on her husband's behalf at the White House. Associates say the change reflects a reassessment of her priorities rather than any step back from her leadership role, with a Turning Point spokesman noting she will "be public when it's important to go public" but is becoming more selective otherwise. Ahead of the anniversary, she hosted a private dinner in Arizona for around 50 Turning Point employees and friends, where attendees shared memories of Charlie.
