Insomniac’s take on Wolverine is ferocious, destructive and cinematic – but a little predictable

Eurogamer · 2 hours ago

Insomniac Games has previewed its upcoming Marvel's Wolverine, showcasing a game built around Logan's ferocity, healing factor and animalistic fighting style rather than the acrobatic swinging of the studio's Spider-Man titles. The preview highlights a bombastic opening sequence and combat system designed to make players feel like an unstoppable, regenerating berserker, though early impressions suggest some of its mechanics, such as parrying, feel familiar to those seen in other modern action games.

Head of Technology Mike Fitzgerald explained that the team deliberately excluded the X-Men from this story to keep the spotlight on Wolverine, while still including other recognisable mutants. The combat centres on a "barrage" claw combo system, a "last stand" regeneration mechanic triggered by button-mashing when Logan is downed, and a "reckless" golden parry attack that rewards precise timing with a special takedown. Insomniac has aimed to balance Logan's near-invincibility and heavy, forward-moving combat style against the risk of making him feel like an overpowered, simplistic bullet-sponge character.

  • Insomniac previews Marvel's Wolverine, its follow-up to Spider-Man games.
  • Combat emphasises aggression, healing factor and animalistic claw attacks.
  • Preview praises polish and cinematic feel, but flags some predictability.
