Bronx man’s five-month cross-country walk ends with belongings stolen in San Francisco
Chantz Rivera, a 29-year-old Bronx resident, completed a five-month walk across the United States by reaching San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge on 27 October. Soon afterwards, someone took items from his shopping cart while he briefly left it unattended at a McDonald’s, turning the end of his journey into a frustrating setback.
Rivera set off on 31 May and walked as far as 2,500 miles, averaging about 20 miles a day while documenting the trip online. He said the stolen items included a portable charger and survival kit, but was especially upset about losing a memory card and USB drive containing irreplaceable photos and videos. He has started a fundraiser for replacements, which had raised more than $16,000 towards a $20,000 goal by Friday evening.
In short
- Chantz Rivera reached San Francisco after walking across the US for five months.
- Items were stolen from his cart at a McDonald’s soon after he arrived.
- His fundraiser had raised over $16,000 towards a $20,000 goal.
Explained simply
The Bronx is a borough of New York City, on the east coast of the United States, while San Francisco is on the west coast. Walking between them means crossing a large part of the country; Rivera set out on 31 May and documented his journey online.
Rivera is a 29-year-old Bronx resident who said he walked up to 2,500 miles, averaging about 20 miles a day. His shopping cart carried supplies as well as a memory card and USB drive with photos and videos from the trip.
The loss matters because those files recorded his journey and, he said, could not be replaced. A fundraiser he started was intended to help pay for replacement equipment and supplies.
