International Disruptors: Studio N Chief Mikyung Kwon On The Value Of Webcomic IP & Taking Risks With Korean Epic ‘The Remarried Empress’
Studio N chief Mikyung Kwon is backing The Remarried Empress, a lavish Disney+ series that she calls the company’s most ambitious and expensive production and the biggest creative gamble of her career. The adaptation matters because it preserves the webcomic’s European-inspired setting rather than shifting it into the familiar conventions of Korean historical drama.
The series is based on a Naver Webtoon that has drawn nearly three billion views across ten languages since 2019. Studio N, a Webtoon subsidiary founded in 2018, has made 48 projects from webcomic properties, including Bloodhounds and My Daughter is a Zombie. The first four episodes of The Remarried Empress launched on Disney+ and Hulu on 3 November, a day ahead of schedule after strong fan interest.
In short
- Studio N calls The Remarried Empress its biggest creative gamble.
- The webcomic has nearly three billion views in ten languages.
- The adaptation keeps its European-inspired setting.
