Internet and telephone services have been disrupted in Ethiopia’s northern Tigray region after fighting broke out between regional forces and the national army. The state-owned Ethio Telecom network has been completely cut, while Safaricom services remain available, raising concerns about access to communications and essential financial services.
The outage is particularly serious because many residents depend on internet banking and mobile-money applications, amid an existing eight-month shortage of cash and limited access to ATMs. Tigray was completely isolated during the two-year civil war that ended in 2022, when restricted access to money, food and medicine contributed to famine-like conditions affecting hundreds of thousands of people.
