Director Neil Jordan says Louis and Lestat’s relationship in Interview with the Vampire did not need more explicit sexual scenes because its queer and marital dimensions were already clear through Anne Rice’s writing and the film’s blood-as-sex metaphor. He describes the story as a toxic, codependent relationship in which Lestat dominates Louis, while Claudia’s transformation traps them together like a dysfunctional marriage.

Speaking to Collider for the film’s 4K restoration, Jordan acknowledged that a modern adaptation could portray the relationship more openly, as the AMC series does, but questioned whether explicit sex would make it more compelling. He said his 1994 film followed the tone and metaphor of Rice’s novel, which he believed focused more on obsession, power and emotional dependency than flamboyant sexual depiction.
