Cold can helps iPhone 18 Pro sustain faster benchmark performance
Software developer Matt Birchler found that chilling an iPhone 18 Pro with a cold drink improved its sustained benchmark performance by reducing heat and thermal throttling. The experiment highlights the challenge of managing heat in powerful, passively cooled smartphones, despite Apple giving the 18 Pro a vapor chamber with three times the surface area of the previous model.
Birchler tested the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro and an M4 Pro MacBook Pro 20 times using on-device transcription. The 18 Pro achieved between 320.9 and 447.9 words per second, representing a 50 per cent improvement over the 17 Pro, but it became hotter and throttled more during extended workloads; placing a cold can against it helped it maintain higher performance.
