Iran has rejected President Donald Trump’s claim that fresh negotiations with the United States would begin on Monday, saying it is not currently holding talks with Washington. The disagreement casts doubt on whether diplomacy can reduce a conflict that has disrupted regional security and global energy markets.

Trump said he postponed threatened large-scale strikes after appeals from Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, and said negotiations would seek to end the war and restore shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Iran said its current discussions are with Oman and concern only a temporary safe shipping route; nine vessels reportedly passed through the strait on Sunday. Before the war, the waterway carried roughly one fifth of globally traded oil and natural gas.
