The renewed hostilities matter because they threaten global oil supplies and shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, and have raised the risk of Iran-linked attacks on American interests worldwide, prompting a fresh US State Department warning to citizens abroad.

Momeni met Pakistan's army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir and was expected to see Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, with Islamabad having played a key brokering role in last month's now-collapsed interim agreement. Iran struck a tanker in the Strait of Hormuz, forcing its crew to abandon ship, while US Central Command carried out further airstrikes on Iranian military, missile and air defence sites; the escalation has pushed Brent crude to near $90 a barrel and US petrol to about $4 a gallon, while President Trump warned Iran would "pay many times over" for any American soldier killed, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Washington remained open to negotiations only if they were "real".
