UK households could face energy bill increases of 25% by January, according to financial journalist Simon Lambert, who has warned that the world may be sleepwalking into its worst energy crisis in 50 years. This warning follows significant recent disruptions to global energy markets, including Ukraine's attacks on Russian oil infrastructure, Houthi control of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, and Iran's blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, all of which constrain oil and gas supplies to international markets.

Natural gas prices have reached three-year highs whilst storage levels remain markedly below their seasonal averages, creating particular concern for the winter period ahead. The disruption to liquefied natural gas exports from the Middle East is forcing Asian markets to seek alternative suppliers, which in turn drives up global prices affecting the UK.
