Oxford faces complaints over lecturer’s prosthetic breasts and attire
Oxford University is facing criticism over biochemistry lecturer Matt Rattley’s appearance while teaching, including wearing women’s clothing, make-up and large prosthetic breasts. The group Sex Matters says the university should consider whether the behaviour is appropriate or could make female students uncomfortable; St Hilda’s College has received formal complaints alleging it undermines women’s dignity and may create a hostile environment.
Rattley was appointed a non-stipendiary lecturer in 2023 and has posted pictures of his appearance on social media. At least three formal complaints have been sent to St Hilda’s, including one from a current student’s parent, while three graduates also wrote to the college expressing concern. Oxford said it does not comment on individual personnel matters and directed students to established complaint procedures; the article also reports an academic’s account of finding Rattley’s presence at staff training distressing.
