NASA's Aerospace Safety Advisory Panel has confirmed that the heat shield on the Orion capsule performed well during the Artemis II mission, resolving a major point of concern that had lingered since problems emerged during Artemis I in 2022. On that earlier uncrewed test flight, the ablative heat shield unexpectedly lost large chunks of char, prompting NASA to keep the same design for Artemis II but alter the capsule's reentry trajectory rather than replace the shield outright. After Artemis II's crew, led by commander Reid Wiseman, safely splashed down in the Pacific following a crewed lunar flyby, officials have now verified through detailed data review that the fix worked, easing concerns about the vehicle's readiness for future deep-space missions.

Panel member Paul Hill said the heat shield's condition was "highly satisfying", noting that Artemis I had produced more than 100 char loss sites, some over an inch deep, compared with roughly nine on Artemis II. The improvement came from flying a steeper reentry angle to reduce time spent in conditions that caused gas to become trapped in the Avcoat material, though this cut the capsule's downrange capability from 4,800 to 1,775 nautical miles. NASA plans to use a more permeable Avcoat for Artemis III and beyond, aiming to avoid char loss while restoring greater downrange range. Panel members also praised NASA's broader progress this year, particularly since Administrator Jared Isaacman's March "Ignition" event outlining accelerated Artemis and Moon base plans.
