Durham captain Sarah Wilson has described the club’s recent financial uncertainty as “horrendous”, after fears that the Women’s Super League 2 side could cease operations. Fresh investment has now secured the club’s future, relieving concerns for players, staff and its pathway for young footballers in the north-east.

Durham, who have played continuously in WSL2 since 2014, warned on 8 June that they needed investment within 21 days to avoid closing. Later that month, local businessman and South Shields co-owner Geoff Thompson and a co-investor acquired a majority stake; the club has since appointed Willie Kirk as head coach and will open the new season against Southampton on 6 September.
