The Claypool Lennon Delirium have announced an elaborate new concept album, The Great Parrot-Ox And The Golden Egg Of Empathy, inspired by philosophical concerns about artificial intelligence. Les Claypool and Sean Ono Lennon use a whimsical prog-opera format to explore discovery, fear, confusion and wonder around AI, continuing the duo’s preference for ambitious and eccentric ideas.

The album draws on Swedish philosopher Nick Bostrom’s 2003 “Paperclip Maximizer” thought experiment, in which a superintelligent AI programmed only to make paperclips could eventually consume resources and outcompete humanity. Prog magazine spoke to Claypool and Lennon about the record, its AI-inspired story and their plans to tour the project.

  • Claypool and Lennon return with an AI-inspired concept album.
  • The record draws on Bostrom’s Paperclip Maximizer thought experiment.
  • The duo plan an ambitious live presentation.
