Meloni calls security talks after cost-of-living protests turn violent in Milan

BBC World ·

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni will hold an emergency security meeting after protests over the rising cost of living turned violent in Milan. She condemned the rioting and urged political opponents to do the same, while opposition leader Elly Schlein said violence should not be used to silence peaceful demonstrators.

More than 5,000 people gathered over the weekend, and Italian media reported that more than 200 were detained, around 80% of them minors. Police used tear gas and water cannons after some protesters threw objects; reports also described injured people, looting and damaged shops. Disorder spread to other northern cities, including Turin and Bologna, amid similar unrest around Europe.
