Jack Cressall Writing ‘Camp Justice’ Pilot Based On John Ryan Book ‘America’s Trial: Torture And The 9/11 Case’
British screenwriter Jack Cressall is writing the pilot for *Camp Justice*, a television adaptation of John Ryan’s book *America’s Trial: Torture and the 9/11 Case*. The series will follow legal proceedings at Guantánamo Bay against the alleged architects of the 9/11 attacks, examining how the pursuit of justice and accountability is shaped by the US’s own actions.
Naomi Harvey of Golden Possum Productions developed the book for television and is attached to produce; a US co-producer is being sought. Ryan spent a decade reporting from Guantánamo Bay, and his book explores the post-9/11 interrogation programme and its continuing effects in court more than two decades later. The proceedings and camp have largely remained out of public view, despite the case’s historical significance.
In short
- Jack Cressall is writing the *Camp Justice* pilot.
- The series adapts John Ryan’s book on the 9/11 case.
- It will examine proceedings and accountability at Guantánamo Bay.
Explained simply
The case centres on proceedings at the US military base at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, against men accused of planning the 11 September 2001 attacks. The attacks killed nearly 3,000 people and led the United States to launch a global campaign against terrorism.
After the attacks, US authorities detained and interrogated terrorism suspects, including through practices that have been widely described as torture. The history of those interrogations remains relevant to the Guantánamo proceedings and raises questions about evidence, accountability and how a court should handle the government’s own conduct.
John Ryan reported from Guantánamo for a decade, and his book examines the case and the lasting effects of the interrogation programme. The proposed television series is based on that book and is being developed by producer Naomi Harvey’s Golden Possum Productions.
