James Cameron’s ‘Terminator 2,’ Michael Mann’s ‘Manhunter’ and Jacques Tati Retrospective Anchor Studiocanal’s New Classics Label

Variety ·

Studiocanal has launched Studiocanal Classics, a global label intended to restore, curate and reissue films from its catalogue of more than 18,000 titles. The initiative matters because it expands the company’s effort to preserve classic cinema in 4K while bringing major older films back to cinemas and home formats for new audiences.

The launch slate includes restored editions of Michael Mann’s “Manhunter”, James Cameron’s “Terminator 2: Judgment Day”, Guillermo del Toro’s “Pan’s Labyrinth” and Ernst Lubitsch’s “To Be or Not to Be”, alongside a Jacques Tati retrospective. Studiocanal says it has invested about €25 million in restoring nearly 1,000 films over seven years; its forthcoming plans include a David Lynch collection, while the pre-release UK collector’s edition of “Manhunter” has already sold out.

Studiocanal is a film company that owns or distributes a large catalogue of films. Film restoration repairs and remasters older prints, often improving picture and sound so films can be shown in cinemas or released on modern formats.

The catalogue includes films by directors such as James Cameron, Michael Mann and Jacques Tati. Restoring these works can help preserve them and make them easier for new audiences to see, while curated releases draw attention to films from different eras and genres.

The initiative sits within a wider effort to keep older cinema available as viewing formats change. It also reflects the role of film companies that hold extensive archives in deciding which works are restored and reintroduced to audiences.
