Japanese avant-garde artist Yayoi Kusama, renowned for her polka dots, pumpkins and immersive Infinity Mirror Rooms, has died aged 97. Her work attracted huge international audiences and helped make her one of the world’s most recognisable contemporary artists, despite decades of being overlooked in a male-dominated art world.

Kusama died in a Tokyo hospital on 14 August, having continued painting until her final days, her company said. She lived and worked voluntarily in a psychiatric hospital for decades after returning to Japan, later representing the country at the 1993 Venice Biennale; a painting sold for about $10.5m (£7.7m) in 2022.
