Jason Cloth, ‘Babylon’ and ‘Joker’ Financier, Indicted in Alleged $100 Million Ponzi Scheme

Variety · 4 hours ago

Jason Cloth, a Hollywood financier with executive producer credits on "Joker," "Babylon" and "Ghostbusters: Afterlife," has been indicted in Chicago over an alleged $100 million Ponzi scheme. The 60-year-old faces seven counts of wire fraud for allegedly misleading investors about how their money would be spent, including diverting funds earmarked for a film project and a gaming platform towards paying off investors in a Canadian real estate scheme. He was arrested in Los Angeles on Tuesday, and the case adds to a long history of civil litigation accusing him of misusing investor funds.

The indictment seeks $12.25 million in reimbursement, with each wire fraud count carrying a theoretical maximum sentence of 20 years. Cloth has previously faced lawsuits including one alleging investors lost $80 million meant for films such as "Ghostbusters: Afterlife" and "Monkey Man," while his company, Creative Wealth Media Finance, went bankrupt in Canada in 2023 amid allegations from Ontario's securities regulator that he had raised roughly $500 million from 500 investors and diverted funds beyond what projects required. He was also ordered to pay $19.6 million in a separate 2024 civil trial, a verdict later upheld on appeal, and the FBI's Chicago office is now seeking additional victims.
