Jay Worthy & George Clinton Are Bringing Funk Back to Rap: ‘It’s Getting Ready to Get Deep Around Here’
Jay Worthy and producer Sean House have made *Generation P*, a 12-song collaboration between LNDN DRGS and George Clinton, built around cleared Parliament-Funkadelic music. The project connects P-Funk’s catalogue with West Coast rap and reflects Worthy’s aim to bring funk back into hip-hop.
Clinton’s grandson, Zavier Croft, initiated the collaboration after playing Worthy’s music during a tour with Clinton; the work then developed over about three years, with Worthy and House shaping tracks from songs approved for sampling. The album features Snoop Dogg, Larry June, 03 Greedo, Ty Dolla $ign, YG and others, and its rollout included a 16-bit video game called *P of the Week*. Clinton, now 85, praised Worthy’s work ethic and said he was enjoying making music.
