US Vice President JD Vance clashed publicly with Democratic Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed on Monday, warning him during a campaign rally to "keep my wife's name the hell out of your mouth". The row erupted while Vance was campaigning for Republican Senate hopeful Mike Rogers, and quickly escalated into a personal and racially charged exchange that has become emblematic of the wider battle between the Trump administration and the Democratic Party's progressive wing ahead of a closely watched Senate race.

The dispute began after Vance criticised El-Sayed's past comments on Sharia law, invoking his late grandfather "Papaw" as an example of the traditional Democrat values he felt El-Sayed had abandoned. El-Sayed hit back on social media with a remark widely read as questioning whether Vance's Indian-American wife, Usha, would have been accepted by his grandfather, prompting Vance's furious on-stage rebuke. Usha Vance later said she had simply "kind of laughed" at the comment, while El-Sayed also referenced a debunked rumour about Vance and accused him of showing more empathy for the attacker than the victims in a deadly Michigan synagogue attack, for which he has since partly apologised.
