Jean-Pierre Dorléac, the costume designer whose work on the 1980 romantic fantasy film Somewhere in Time earned him an Oscar nomination, has died aged 83. He passed away on Thursday of natural causes at his home in the Hollywood Hills, his family confirmed, closing out a career that spanned decades of film and television costume work and shaped the look of numerous cult classics.

Born in Toulon, France, in 1943, Dorléac trained at the École des Beaux-Arts before beginning his Hollywood career as an actor, later transitioning into costume design and becoming a protégé of Edith Head. He won Emmy awards for Battlestar Galactica (1979) and The Lot (2001), and received nine further nominations, including four for Quantum Leap. His screen credits also included Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, The Blue Lagoon and Heart and Souls, and he authored two books. He is survived by his spouse, Gilberto Mello, and, per his wishes, no memorial service will be held.
