Marvel and Pan Universal Galactic Worldwide are crowdfunding Marvel Artist Archive: Jim Lee, a premium hardcover celebrating Lee’s early Marvel artwork, particularly from his influential X-Men work. The release matters because it revisits the period that established Lee as a major comics artist before he became DC Comics’ President, Publisher and Chief Creative Officer.

The 9-by-12-inch slipcase book will reproduce hundreds of Lee’s original drawings, while optional 11-by-17-inch portfolio sets will present selected splash pages and covers at original size. Backers can also add miniature cover recreations stored in a scale-model comic shortbox; the publishers say this will be the first in a planned series of retrospective artist books.
