Johnson notches early win on reconciliation 3.0, but tougher fights lie ahead

House Republicans have narrowly approved a budget framework for a third reconciliation package, giving Speaker Mike Johnson an early procedural victory. The move opens a path for the party to pursue President Trump’s priorities without Democratic votes, but the proposal still faces difficult negotiations in the House and resistance in the Senate.

The framework would enable work on a roughly $95 billion package, including $60 billion for the Pentagon and other national-security needs, $12 billion for farmers affected by tariffs, and $10 billion linked to election-law changes. It passed 216–214, with two Republicans and one independent joining Democrats in opposition; conservative concerns about the lack of spending offsets and Senate doubts remain major obstacles.
