Jon Ossoff humiliates Trump-backed Mike Collins in Georgia Senate rout as Democrat’s crushing victory fuels 2028 speculation
Jon Ossoff won re-election to Georgia’s Senate seat, defeating Mike Collins, the Trump-backed Republican challenger, in a race called less than an hour after polls closed. The result dealt a setback to Republicans and added to signs that Democrats could make gains in the midterm elections, while increasing speculation about Ossoff’s national ambitions.
Ossoff’s campaign focused on the cost of living, healthcare and challenging powerful industries, as well as criticism of Donald Trump. He raised nearly $125 million by the end of September, compared with Collins’s $5.8 million; Collins’s campaign was also hurt by controversy over white supremacist views expressed by people in his political and family circles. Ossoff said he had “zero interest” in running for president, despite the renewed talk of a 2028 bid.
In short
- Ossoff won re-election in Georgia.
- He raised nearly $125 million, against Collins’s $5.8 million.
- The result fuelled talk of a possible 2028 presidential run.
