Julie Andrews has confirmed she will not reprise her role as Queen Clarisse Renaldi in the upcoming third instalment of The Princess Diaries, telling interviewers the story now belongs to Anne Hathaway's character, Princess Mia. Speaking to Today.com, Andrews said it was "too late" for her to take part and that the narrative "has to continue in Princess Mia," while in a separate interview with InStyle she described herself as effectively retired and said she turned the production team down despite being asked repeatedly over the past year.

Andrews had signalled a similar reluctance back in 2022, when the third film was first confirmed, citing her age and the many years since 2004's The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement. The original 2001 film, directed by Garry Marshall and based on Meg Cabot's novels, starred Hathaway as a San Francisco teenager who discovers she is heir to the throne of Genovia, with Andrews as her grandmother and mentor; both actresses returned for the 2004 sequel before the long-gestating third film began development.
