Juliette Lewis on Fiery ‘Cape Fear’ Finale, ‘Nostalgic’ Nods to 1991 Film and Why Crystal Will ‘Haunt’ Max Forever

Variety · 4 hours ago

Juliette Lewis discusses returning to the world of “Cape Fear” in Apple TV’s series adaptation, 35 years after her Oscar-nominated role in Martin Scorsese’s 1991 film. This time she plays Crystal, a violent and unstable antagonist whose death in the fiery finale brings her storyline to an end, while leaving Max Cady psychologically marked by their abusive family history.

Lewis says filming the original houseboat sequence with Robert De Niro and Jessica Lange was enjoyable despite its frightening subject matter, and that the experience shaped her career. The new series deliberately echoes the 1991 film, including another houseboat setting, while revealing that Crystal is Max’s sister and that their childhood relationship involved cruelty, sexual abuse and the possibility of a child; Lewis describes Crystal as someone who will continue to “haunt” Max.

  • Juliette Lewis returns to “Cape Fear” as the villainous Crystal.
  • Crystal dies in the finale’s fiery houseboat sequence.
  • The series revisits and expands the original film’s dark themes.
