Just Eat apologises for AI food mistakes after social media ridicule

BBC Technology ·

Just Eat apologised after AI-generated menu images for some restaurants depicted foods inaccurately, prompting ridicule on social media. The company said it was removing the incorrect pictures and pausing new AI images while it develops the technology, highlighting the risk of using AI to interpret menu terms without enough context.

The platform had been testing AI images for dishes that did not yet have photographs. Mistakes included bacon and egg floating in a glass of cola after “soda” was confused with soda bread, chips appearing in a muffin, and a cheese roll depicted as sushi. Just Eat said it works with tens of thousands of small restaurants and also funds professional local photographers; AI images are labelled on the app.
